PM Modi Welcomes Indonesian President into BRICS at Brazil Summit

Brasilia, July 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally welcomed Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto as a full member of BRICS during the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that this moment shows India’s rising importance in global diplomacy. Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations), said in a media briefing that PM Modi thanked Brazilian President Lula da Silva for his hospitality and welcomed Indonesia into the BRICS group.

President Prabowo posted on social media (X) that the summit focused on “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for Inclusive and Sustainable Governance”. He said all leaders discussed global challenges and worked on strategies to help Southern countries grow stronger together.

President Prabowo added that Indonesia is committed to promoting fair and inclusive global cooperation, especially in economy, education, technology, and finance. These goals match BRICS' main focus on creating a more balanced and sustainable world.

Secretary Ravi highlighted that Brazilian President Lula highly valued PM Modi’s presence at the summit. He added that India will become the BRICS Chair in 2026, and PM Modi’s visit was seen as very important for shaping the future of the group.

This year’s summit had a larger format with 11 permanent members, 9 partner countries, 8 invitee nations, and 7 international organizations, showing BRICS' growing role in international matters.
