New Delhi, Aug 21:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Online Gaming Bill 2025 reflects India’s commitment to becoming a global hub for gaming, innovation, and creativity.
The Bill takes a balanced approach – promoting positive aspects like e-Sports and online social games, while banning harmful online money games that affect the middle class and youth.
“This Bill will encourage e-Sports and safe online games. At the same time, it will protect our society from the dangers of money-based online games,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
Key Highlights of the Bill:
-
E-Sports Legal Recognition:
Games based on skill, teamwork, and strategy – like cricket or football – will now have legal status. The government will launch schemes to promote them. -
Support for Online Social Games:
Fun, educational, and community-based games like Angry Birds, casual brain games, and card games are recognised as safe. Game developers will be supported as part of India’s creator economy. -
Ban on Online Money Games:
Addictive money games involving betting and gambling are prohibited due to their harmful impact. They have led to financial fraud, debts, money laundering, and even suicides.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that thousands of families have suffered due to money games. He added that PM Modi always prioritises family safety and social welfare over government revenue.
