Prime Minister Modi Congratulates Nepal PM Sushila Karki

Sushila Karki Assumes Charge as Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister

A historic moment unfolded in Nepal politics as Sushila Karki was sworn in as the country’s interim Prime Minister, becoming the first woman to hold the position. Her appointment comes after the resignation of KP Sharma Oli’s government last week, following widespread protests led by the Gen-Z youth.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed her appointment, stating on social media: “Heartfelt congratulations to Sushila Karki on assuming charge as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister. India remains committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the people of Nepal.”

In recent months, anti-corruption protests by the younger generation shook Nepal. The Oli government’s restrictions on social media and suppression of free expression escalated tensions, leading to violent demonstrations targeting parliament and several government and private buildings. The army intervened to restore law and order and relocated Oli to a secure area.

During the search for a leader to guide the nation, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki emerged as a prominent choice. She received strong public support from Gen-Z youth, including an innovative online public voting process conducted on Discord. Seen as a symbol of youth aspirations and integrity, the public expects her to deliver corruption-free governance.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs also welcomed the formation of Nepal’s interim government, emphasizing that “as a neighbouring country and democratic partner, India will continue working with Nepal for the welfare of both nations’ peoples.”

Sushila Karki’s interim government aims to restore peace and ensure smooth elections. The interim administration has announced that nationwide general elections will be held on March 5, 2026, to form a new government.
