Centre Approves ₹4,224 Crore PMGSY-IV Package for 316 Road Projects in J&K
Srinagar, June 11: In a significant infrastructure boost, the Central Government has approved a ₹4,224.23 crore package under PMGSY-IV for 316 new road projects in Jammu and Kashmir. This marks the largest-ever allocation for the Union Territory since the inception of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), the flagship rural road development initiative.
The new projects will add 1,781.33 km of rural roads, connecting even small habitations with populations as low as 250 people. The majority of these projects will benefit the Jammu division, which continues to face connectivity challenges compared to the Kashmir division.
Expressing gratitude, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said the new road infrastructure will significantly improve rural connectivity and transform the socio-economic landscape of remote areas. On social media platform X, he stated:
"Grateful to PM Narendra Modi & Union Minister of Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan for sanctioning 316 road projects at an estimated cost of ₹4,224 crore under Batch-I of PMGSY-IV. J&K is the first among all States/UTs to receive approval under this phase. This road length will connect 390 eligible habitations and usher in a new era of prosperity in far-flung areas."
Unlike PMGSY-III, which largely focused on upgrading existing roads and included bridge construction worth ₹377.91 crore, the PMGSY-IV allocation is dedicated solely to new road construction. The entire sanctioned amount will be used for laying fresh road networks, not for upgrades or bridge works.
Of the total ₹4,224.23 crore sanctioned, the Union Rural Development Ministry will contribute ₹3,801.80 crore, while the J&K government will bear ₹422.43 crore.
This development is expected to greatly enhance rural mobility, economic activity, and access to services across Jammu and Kashmir.
