Chennai, June 2:
Government schools in Tamil Nadu will reopen on Monday after summer vacation. This year, there is a strong focus on digital learning and building basic skills in reading, writing, and math.
CBSE and other board schools in Tamil Nadu will reopen between June 2 and June 6.
Starting this academic year, digital learning will begin as early as Class 1. All government primary schools now have smart boards installed.
Elementary Education Director P.A. Naresh said students will get a special digital learning experience from the first day. “All primary schools have smart boards, and middle schools have high-tech labs. Our main goals this year are to increase enrollment, keep students attending regularly, improve learning results, and strictly prevent POCSO-related offences,” he said.
Before reopening, schools in the city cleaned and prepared their campuses. Teachers met to plan the new academic schedule. More than 185,000 students have enrolled in Class 1 so far, and this number may exceed 400,000 by the end of June.
For Classes 6 to 8, the government launched a new program called ‘Thiran’ to improve reading and writing in Tamil and English, and basic math skills.
School Education Director S. Kannappan said, “We are focusing on improving language and math skills. Teachers will use online tools to help students improve pronunciation and spoken English. To strengthen math skills, students will practice multiplication tables every day.”
The government will introduce a major revision of the curriculum from the 2025–26 academic year. However, this year, RTE admissions in private schools are not happening due to pending reimbursements from the central government. Usually, about 70,000 students join around 8,000 private schools through the RTE Act every year.
Some schools are also starting foundation classes for NEET and JEE from Class 9. Chennai Corporation schools aim to improve board exam results and increase student admissions. Padmaja R., headmistress of Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Saidapet, said, “We want more top scorers in Classes 10 and 12 this year.”
