PM Modi Arrives in Canada to Attend G7 Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Calgary, Canada, on Monday to attend the G7 Summit, following an invitation from Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney. Upon arrival, he was welcomed by Acting Indian High Commissioner Chinmoy Naik, Canadian officials, and representatives of Canada’s First Nation communities.
After reaching Canada, PM Modi travelled to Kananaskis, a beautiful hill town where the G7 summit is taking place with tight security. The main sessions will be held on Tuesday, and PM Modi will join other world leaders to discuss major global issues. Before coming to Canada, Modi visited Cyprus and had detailed talks with President Nikos Christodoulides about strengthening India-Cyprus relations.
At the G7 Summit, PM Modi will meet leaders such as Emmanuel Macron (France), Keir Starmer (UK), Giorgia Meloni (Italy), Shigeru Ishiba (Japan), Friedrich Merz (Germany), and Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa from the European Union. US President Donald Trump is missing the event due to urgent issues back home. Leaders from countries like Ukraine, Brazil, South Korea, Australia, Mexico, and South Africa are also attending.
PM Modi’s visit comes at a key time as India-Canada relations are improving after a rough period during former PM Justin Trudeau’s term. Indo-Canadians are excited about the visit, as Canada is home to 1.8 million people of Indian origin and over 1 million Indian citizens. The Indian community believes this visit will help boost trade and friendship between the two countries.
