Heavy Rains in AP: Red Alert for 6 Districts

An area of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal is causing heavy rains across Andhra Pradesh. The Meteorological Department has warned that this low-pressure system may intensify into a cyclone by Thursday afternoon. As the system moves west-northwest towards northern Tamil Nadu and the southern Andhra Pradesh coast, widespread heavy rainfall is expected in several parts of the state.

The state government has been alerted due to the cyclone threat. The Meteorological Department has issued a Red Alert for six districts: Prakasam, Nellore, Tirupati, Chittoor, Annamayya, and YSR Kadapa, where extremely heavy rainfall is likely. Orange Alerts have been issued for Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai, Kurnool, and Nandyal districts, and a Yellow Alert for Palnadu district. The Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Authority (APDMA) stated that thunderstorms and rain will continue across the state for the next five days.

Continuous rainfall has already been recorded in Srikalahasti, Nellore, Prakasam, and other parts of Rayalaseema. By Wednesday morning, Srikalahasti recorded a record 19 cm of rainfall. Strong winds along the coast are blowing at 35–55 km/h, prompting authorities to issue strict warnings that fishermen should avoid venturing into the sea until Saturday.

Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha and Special CS of Disaster Management G. Jayalakshmi held a video conference with district collectors of the affected areas. They instructed that NDRF and SDRF teams be kept ready for relief operations. One NDRF and four SDRF teams have been deployed to Nellore, Prakasam, Kadapa, and Tirupati districts. Residents in low-lying areas are advised to be moved to safe zones, and control rooms have been set up in each district to continuously monitor and alert the public.
