New Delhi, May 27:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, on his death anniversary today.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi said: "Tributes to our former PM, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary."
Jawaharlal Nehru, born on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad, played a key role in India's freedom struggle and became a central figure in building modern India. With the support of Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru became the main leader of the Indian National Congress and was declared Gandhi’s political heir.
He served as India's interim Prime Minister from 1946 and was sworn in as the first Prime Minister on August 15, 1947, delivering the historic "Tryst with Destiny" speech.
On his death anniversary, several prominent leaders also paid respects:
-
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said, “A great statesman and humanist, Pandit Nehru was the visionary architect of modern India. His ideas will continue to inspire all who love democracy.”
-
Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar praised Nehru’s unmatched role in building the nation’s foundation.
-
Sharad Pawar, NCP (Sharad faction) leader, said Nehru gave India a scientific, secular, and democratic direction and shaped a foreign policy based on independence and self-respect.
Nehru believed that true development meant improving lives at all levels of society. His thoughts on democracy, science, and equality remain relevant even today.
Pandit Nehru passed away on May 27, 1964, due to a suspected heart attack. His last journey was marked with full state honors.
To honor his love for children, his birthday, November 14, is celebrated as Children’s Day in India.
