UPI transactions rise by 23% to ₹25.14 lakh crore in May

UPI Sees Strong Growth in May with 18.68 Billion Transactions
New Delhi, June 2: Unified Payments Interface (UPI) saw a strong recovery in May 2025 by processing 18.68 billion transactions, up from 17.89 billion in April.

According to data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI recorded a 33% year-on-year growth compared to 14.03 billion transactions in May 2024.

The total value of UPI transactions in May was ₹25.14 lakh crore, a 5% increase from ₹23.95 lakh crore in April, and 23% higher than ₹20.45 lakh crore in May last year.

The average daily transaction volume was 602 million, and the average daily transaction value stood at ₹81,106 crore.

UPI's share in India’s digital payment ecosystem grew to 83.7% in FY 2024-25, up from 79.7% last year.

As per the RBI’s annual report, UPI handled 185.8 billion transactions in 2024-25, showing a 41% yearly increase. In value, UPI reached ₹261 lakh crore, up from ₹200 lakh crore in FY24.

The RBI highlighted that UPI contributed to 48.5% of global real-time payment transactions, making India a global leader in this space.

In total, digital payments in India (including cards, PPIs, and other systems) grew 35% to 221.9 billion transactions in FY25. In value terms, digital payments reached ₹2,862 lakh crore, up 17.97% from last year.

The RBI also announced its goal to expand UPI to 20 countries by 2028–29. Currently, Indian UPI apps can be used in Bhutan, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and the UAE using QR codes.
