40% GST Imposed on Luxury Goods: Nirmala Sitharaman

40% GST on Luxury Goods: Nirmala Sitharaman Announces New Tax Slab

New Delhi, Sep 4: In a major announcement, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has confirmed that luxury goods will now attract 40% Goods and Services Tax (GST). The decision was taken during the latest GST Council meeting as part of tax reforms aimed at rationalizing the slab system.

According to the Finance Minister, high-end products such as luxury cars, premium watches, designer jewelry, and other expensive lifestyle items will be taxed under the 40% GST slab. This move is expected to increase government revenue while discouraging excessive spending on luxury imports.

The GST Council recently reduced the number of slabs and introduced this new 40% rate exclusively for luxury and sin goods. Essential items, education, healthcare, and agriculture continue to enjoy lower or nil GST rates.

Experts believe the decision will help in balancing the economy by focusing on welfare sectors while taxing high-end consumption. “This will ensure that the rich contribute more, while the poor and middle-class benefit from GST relief,” Sitharaman added.

The announcement has created ripples in the real estate, automobile, and luxury retail markets, which may see a rise in product costs. However, the government insists this reform is necessary to make GST more efficient and equitable.
