The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)'s plans to host the remaining matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) seem to have hit a major roadblock. Reliable sources indicate that the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) is hesitant to permit the tournament due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
Strong Ties with BCCI Influence ECB Decision
Despite PCB's announcement of shifting the PSL to the UAE, ECB officials have reportedly expressed concerns about potential security risks arising from the growing border conflict. Sources reveal that the ECB is reluctant to appear supportive of the PCB in the current political climate.
The ECB's close relationship with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also believed to be a key factor. Over the years, the UAE has hosted several IPL seasons, ICC events like the T20 World Cup 2021 (India edition), and upcoming ICC Champions Trophy matches involving India. With the ICC headquarters based in Dubai, under the leadership of former BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, the UAE is seen as leaning toward India’s stance in international cricket politics.
ECB officials are also reportedly concerned that organizing the PSL amid such tense circumstances could disrupt the social harmony among the large South Asian diaspora in the UAE, potentially leading to public unrest or security issues.
PCB Officially Postpones PSL Indefinitely
Just hours after announcing the relocation of PSL matches to the UAE, the PCB made a U-turn and declared the tournament postponed indefinitely. In an official statement, the board cited the intensified military tensions with India and national focus on defense efforts as reasons.
"Pakistan's armed forces are courageously defending the nation's sovereignty amid increasing aggression from across the border. As a mark of respect and solidarity, and following the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the PSL has been postponed," the PCB stated. It added that PCB and its players stand firmly with the families of martyrs and security personnel safeguarding the nation.
Interestingly, due to similar border tensions, the BCCI had also canceled remaining matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL). These developments underline how deeply politics is affecting cricketing relations between the two nations.
