Telugu states are experiencing heavy rainfall, causing rivers and canals to swell. Recent rains in the upper catchment areas have led to a surge of floodwaters into projects across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, forcing authorities to open barrage gates. The Krishna and Godavari rivers are now merging floodwaters into the sea.
At Prakasam Barrage, Vijayawada, managing director Prakhar Jain reported that as of 6:30 PM on Tuesday, inflow reached 4.11 lakh cusecs, with an equal amount being released into the sea. The first warning alert continues, and flows may rise to 4.5 lakh cusecs by evening.
Meanwhile, at Dhavaleshwaram Cotton Barrage (Godavari), inflow is 3.97 lakh cusecs, with 4 lakh cusecs being released into the sea. By September 28, flows could increase to 9.5–10 lakh cusecs, approaching the first warning level.
Emergency measures include:
- 5 SDRF teams deployed at Prakasam Barrage, Vijayawada.
- 1 SDRF team at Amalapuram, Konaseema.
- 2 NDRF teams at Tirumala river ghats.
Authorities advise residents in low-lying areas to take precautions, avoid crossing overflowing canals, and shift to relief centers if necessary. Control rooms will operate 24/7. Special instructions were issued for Dussehra and Navaratri festival activities, including safety arrangements at river ghats and coordination with temple authorities.
