Krishna River Floods: Srisailam & Nagarjuna Sagar Reservoirs Overflow, Gates Opened

Heavy inflows into the Krishna River have caused major reservoirs in Telugu states, Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar, to reach near-full capacity. Authorities have opened the gates of both projects, releasing lakhs of cusecs of water downstream, resulting in a spectacular flow along the river.

At Srisailam, heavy floodwaters from upstream projects like Jurala and Sunkesula have almost filled the reservoir. With an inflow of 3,95,563 cusecs, authorities opened 10 spillway gates, releasing 2,75,700 cusecs of water towards Nagarjuna Sagar. The total capacity of Srisailam is 215.80 TMC, and the current water level has reached 209.15 TMC, with an outflow of 3,46,374 cusecs.

Meanwhile, due to incoming water from Srisailam and other upstream flows, Nagarjuna Sagar in Nalgonda district is also experiencing floods. With an inflow of 2.94 lakh cusecs, authorities raised 22 crest gates, releasing 1.7 lakh cusecs downstream. The total outflow from Nagarjuna Sagar stands at 2.22 lakh cusecs, while the reservoir’s full capacity is 312.04 TMC, with current storage at 302.91 TMC.

The simultaneous opening of gates at these two major projects has caused strong flows along the Krishna River, affecting downstream areas and demonstrating the massive scale of the floodwaters.
