Air India: Major Changes in Air India’s International Services

Air India to Implement New Schedule from June 21 to July 15; Major Changes in International Services

Air India, a leading airline under the Tata Group management, announced significant changes to its international flight services. The airline will completely suspend services on three international routes and reduce flights on 16 other routes from June 21 to July 15. The main aim of these adjustments is to bring stability to the schedule and minimize last-minute inconveniences to passengers.

Following the recent airplane accident on June 12 in Ahmedabad, Air India is conducting additional safety inspections on its Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 aircraft. As a result, the airline has decided to temporarily reduce its wide-body international flights by approximately 15 percent. These adjustments were initially hinted at on Wednesday and fully announced on Thursday.

Details of Suspended and Reduced Services:

According to the latest decision, flights on the Delhi-Nairobi, Amritsar-London (Gatwick), and Goa (Mopa)-London (Gatwick) routes will be completely suspended until July 15. Currently, there are four weekly flights on the Delhi-Nairobi route, and three weekly flights on both Amritsar-London and Goa-London routes.

Additionally, flight frequencies have been cut on 16 international routes connecting cities in North America, Europe, Australia, and East Asia. In North America, flight reductions will affect Delhi-Toronto, Delhi-Vancouver, Delhi-San Francisco, Delhi-Chicago, and Delhi-Washington routes.

In Europe, flights on Delhi-London Heathrow, Bengaluru-London Heathrow, Amritsar-Birmingham, Delhi-Birmingham, Delhi-Paris, Delhi-Milan, Delhi-Copenhagen, Delhi-Vienna, and Delhi-Amsterdam will see frequency cuts. Similarly, flights on Delhi-Melbourne, Delhi-Sydney, Delhi-Tokyo Haneda, and Delhi-Seoul (Incheon) routes will also be reduced.

Reasons Explained by the CEO:

Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson addressed passengers regarding these changes, stating, "The need to voluntarily increase the strictness of security checks before boarding, along with the closure of airspace routes over the Middle East, leading to longer flight durations, have necessitated these service reductions."

Wilson added, "The closure of air routes over Iran and the Middle East, nighttime restrictions at some international airports, routine technical issues, and the time taken for additional security inspections have caused an increase in cancellations across our long-haul network in recent days." He also mentioned that reducing services allows the airline to keep backup aircraft ready to handle unforeseen issues.

Apologizing for the inconvenience caused by these temporary changes, Air India assured that affected passengers will be contacted proactively. The airline will offer alternatives such as seat allocation on alternate flights, free rescheduling, or full refunds based on passenger preferences.
