The long wait for Polavaram Project displaced families is finally over. The Andhra Pradesh government has released ₹1,100 crore as part of the rehabilitation and support package. From the earlier advance of ₹1,800 crore provided by the central government, the remaining funds have been transferred to a special project account by the state finance department.
These funds are expected to be sufficient to provide compensation to families affected by the 41.15-meter contour in the first phase of the project. Officials stated that with an additional ₹100 crore, the payments for this phase could be completed entirely.
Central pressure prompted the state to act: During a review meeting, Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil warned that funds allocated in the budget could lapse if not spent within the stipulated time. Following this, the state finance department released ₹1,100 crore immediately.
Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu, along with Special Chief Secretary Sai Prasad, ensured that the funds are directly credited to the beneficiaries’ accounts and plans are underway to hold a meeting with the affected families.
