A large cargo ship named Morning Midas, carrying nearly 3,000 new vehicles including 800 electric cars, has sunk in the North Pacific Ocean, weeks after a major fire accident onboard. The vessel was heading to Mexico from China when the incident occurred.
According to the US Coast Guard, the ship sank near Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, about 415 miles from shore in waters over 16,000 feet deep. The fire had started three weeks ago while the ship was about 300 miles off the coast of Alaska. All 22 crew members on board were safely rescued using lifeboats by a nearby commercial ship. Officials confirmed that no lives were lost.
The ship was managed by a London-based company called Zodiac Maritime. The US Coast Guard stated that there are no signs of pollution in the ocean as of now. The fire, rough weather, and water entering the ship were the main reasons for its sinking. The ship, built in 2006 and registered under the Liberian flag, was en route from Yantai, China to Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico.
