Bharat Bandh Called Against Central Government Policies
More than 10 trade unions and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) have called for a nationwide Bharat Bandh on Thursday (February 12) to protest against the policies of the Central Government. The joint platform of trade unions stated that the strike is being organized against what they call anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate policies of the Centre. It is estimated that nearly 30 crore workers may participate in this nationwide strike.
The support of Samyukta Kisan Morcha is expected to increase the impact of the bandh across the country. Government banks, insurance services, transport, electricity, coal, and gas sectors may face disruptions. As bank employee unions like AIBEA and AIBOA are participating in the strike, banking services may be partially affected in many regions.
The unions are demanding the withdrawal of the new labour codes, cancellation of 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the insurance sector, and a halt to privatization. AITUC General Secretary Amarjeet Kaur said that the strike has been called to strongly oppose the government’s policies. However, essential services such as hospitals, ambulances, pharmacies, and milk supply have been exempted from the bandh. Private offices, IT companies, schools, and colleges are likely to function normally, but operations may vary depending on local conditions.
