India Accuses Pakistan of Violating Indus Water Treaty with Terror Support
United Nations, May 24:
India has accused Pakistan of breaking the spirit of the Indus Water Treaty by supporting terrorism and stopping important safety upgrades to water infrastructure.
India’s UN representative, P. Harish, said that even though Pakistan continues to spread false news that India has suspended the treaty unfairly, India has shown great patience. He added that Pakistan, which supports cross-border terrorism, is the real violator of the treaty. India has now said the treaty will be kept on hold until Pakistan ends its support for terrorism completely and permanently.
This decision comes after terrorists from Pakistan killed 26 people in India last month. The Indus Water Treaty, signed in 1960 with help from the World Bank, was made to share river water fairly between both countries. However, Harish said that many serious problems have come up, like cross-border attacks, increasing needs for clean energy, climate changes, and safety concerns with old dams. Despite many requests from India to discuss changes, Pakistan refused to cooperate. He stressed that the treaty was meant for peace and friendship, but Pakistan has fought wars and supported thousands of terror attacks. Over 20,000 Indians have lost their lives in such attacks over the past 40 years.
