West Indies Batter Nicholas Pooran Retires from International Cricket

New Delhi, June 10:
West Indies’ top-ranked T20I batsman Nicholas Pooran has announced his retirement from international cricket, ending a nine-year career.

The Trinidad-born player represented West Indies 167 times, scoring 1,983 runs in ODIs at an average of 39.66 with a strike rate of 99.15. Although he never played Test cricket, Pooran holds the record for most T20 International appearances by a West Indian with 106 matches and is the highest T20I run-scorer for West Indies with 2,275 runs. His last international match was in December 2024.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Pooran said, “After much thought, I have decided to retire from international cricket. This sport has given me immense joy, purpose, and unforgettable memories. Wearing the maroon jersey, leading the team as captain, and representing the West Indies means the world to me.”

He added, “Though this chapter ends, my love for West Indies cricket will never fade. I wish the team all the best for the future.”

Pooran first appeared for West Indies in the 2014 Under-19 World Cup, making his senior T20I debut in 2016 against Pakistan, followed by his ODI debut in 2018. He was part of the 2019 Cricket World Cup squad and served as vice-captain for the 2021 T20 World Cup. In 2022, he captained the West Indies in white-ball formats, including the T20 World Cup.

Cricket West Indies expressed gratitude for Pooran’s contributions, stating, “We thank Nicholas Pooran for his outstanding service to West Indies cricket. His retirement marks the end of an important chapter. We salute his achievements and wish him success in his future endeavors.
