Massive Earthquake Hits Chile and Argentina Coasts, Tsunami Alert Issued

On Friday morning, a strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit near the southern coasts of Chile and Argentina, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was located 219 km south of Ushuaia city in Argentina, in the Drake Passage, at a depth of 10 km.

Immediately after the quake, tsunami warnings were issued. Chilean authorities ordered the evacuation of people from the Magallanes region’s coast and warned that tsunami waves could hit Antarctica and southern Chile cities. People were seen calmly moving to safe zones as sirens rang.

Chile’s President Gabriel Boric said all emergency resources are ready. He urged the public to follow instructions and stay calm. In Argentina, Ushuaia city felt strong tremors, but no damage or casualties were reported. As a precaution, all water activities in the Beagle Channel were stopped for three hours.
