Central Government Urges States to Consider Establishing Nuclear Power Plants

Panaji, May 12: Union Minister of Power, Manohar Lal Khattar, announced on Monday that the Centre has instructed state governments to explore the feasibility of setting up nuclear power plants. The Centre also asked Goa's Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to consider establishing a nuclear power plant as a long-term solution for energy security and sustainability in the coastal state.

The Union Minister mentioned that India currently generates eight gigawatts of nuclear power and aims to reach 100 gigawatts by 2047.

“We believe that if there is a possibility of setting up a nuclear power plant, it should be considered. If Goa presents a proposal for such a plant in the future, it will be looked at positively,” he stated while speaking to the media after the meeting.

He further highlighted that Goa does not have any thermal, hydro, or solar power plants. Since about 80% of Goa's electricity is sourced from outside the state, the Minister urged the state to explore all available options for local power generation.

The meeting concluded with an assurance that the Ministry of Power would provide full support to Goa in achieving its energy objectives.

The Minister also emphasized the importance of improving operational efficiency and encouraged the state to further reduce utility losses while increasing the integration of renewable energy into the grid. This, he noted, would help reduce the cost of power supply and improve overall performance.

Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Naik, Goa's Power Minister Sudin Dhavalikar, and Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane also attended the meeting.

The discussion also covered developments in the power sector, loss reduction initiatives, and progress under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

Manohar Lal commended the government of Goa and the Electricity Department for their efforts in ensuring power availability and achieving universal electrification. He stated: “Goa has significantly reduced AT&C losses to 9.32%, which is much lower than the national average. This reflects the state’s dedication to improving the efficiency of its power distribution system.”

The Minister acknowledged the state's progress in implementing infrastructure works under RDSS to reduce losses. However, he emphasized the need to accelerate the rollout of smart meters, which can enhance consumer engagement through data analytics and AI/ML tools.

“Now that the contracts are awarded, I am confident the implementation will speed up. Prioritizing the installation of smart meters in government offices, colonies, commercial and industrial units, and high-load consumers will ensure digitization and better service delivery,” Manohar Lal added.

He also praised Goa’s citizen-friendly approach in simplifying procedures for rooftop solar installations and new electricity connections, improving the ease of living for consumers.
