The United States has increased tariffs on Indian exports up to 50%, yet the Indian Rupee showed no signs of weakness. Instead, it strengthened by 3 paise against the US Dollar during early trading, reaching ₹87.69 per dollar. This shows the Rupee’s resilience despite trade pressures from the US.
The reason for this tariff hike is linked to India’s continued purchase of crude oil from Russia. Former US President Donald Trump announced an additional 25% duty on Indian goods, calling it a "penalty" for trading with Russia. Trump also warned that similar actions may be taken against other countries dealing with Russia.
India strongly objected to this move. The Ministry of External Affairs called the decision “unfair, unreasonable, and unnecessary.” India explained that it imports oil based on its own energy needs and market conditions. The ministry emphasized that India’s energy decisions are based on securing fuel for 1.4 billion people and that targeting only India is highly unfortunate. Experts are now watching the situation closely, as trade relations between the two countries become tense.
