Sudan Gold Mine Collapse: 11 Dead, 7 Injured

Sudan Gold Mine Collapse Kills 11, Injures 7

Khartoum, June 30 – At least 11 people lost their lives and seven others were injured after a gold mine collapsed in northeastern Sudan, according to the state-owned Mineral Resources Company.

The incident happened at the Kersh Al-Feel gold mine, located in the Houeid area, between Atbara and Haya in Red Sea State. The exact date of the collapse was not shared. The company said the mine had already been ordered to shut down earlier due to safety issues.

The company stated that it had previously warned about the dangers and suspended operations at the site. It also promised to strengthen safety rules and monitor all mining activities. Sudan depends heavily on gold mining, but many traditional mines operate without proper safety, leading to frequent accidents.

According to reports, around 1.5 million small-scale miners produce nearly 80% of Sudan’s gold, which reached 64 tonnes in 2024. Most of this gold is exported to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, some groups accuse the UAE of supplying weapons to RSF rebels, which the UAE denies. The ongoing war has already damaged Sudan’s weak economy.
