MS Dhoni Discusses His IPL Future and Retirement Plans

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) veteran cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni recently opened up about his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL). As he approaches his 44th birthday this July, Dhoni shared that he has yet to decide whether IPL 2025 will be his final season. While he plays only two months each year, he spends the remaining six to eight months focusing on body preparation. Whether his body can handle the strain of continuous playing is something he still needs to evaluate. Dhoni made these remarks following a match against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Dhoni expressed gratitude for the unwavering support he receives from fans, mentioning that their affection brings him immense happiness.

CSK's head coach, Stephen Fleming, revealed that Dhoni is currently dealing with knee issues, which are limiting his time at the crease. In the match against Kolkata, Dhoni entered the crease in the 13th over after Dewald Brevis was dismissed. He then supported Shivam Dube and hit a crucial six, guiding the team to victory.

With CSK now out of the playoff race, Dhoni stated that the remaining matches are being used to prepare the team for the IPL 2026 season. He mentioned that opportunities are being given to young players like Urvil Patel and Dewald Brevis. In his debut match, Urvil Patel scored 31 runs off just 11 balls, while Brevis scored a half-century off 22 balls.

"While players can be assessed in nets and practice games, it’s only in actual matches that their skill and mental resilience come to light. Success isn't only about technical superiority but also mental strength to understand the game and predict a bowler’s strategy," said Dhoni. He emphasized that the team is looking for these qualities in young players.
