Telangana Gets New Police Chief: IPS Shivadhar Reddy Takes Charge

Hyderabad, Sep 26: The Telangana government has appointed IPS officer Battula Shivadhar Reddy as the new Director General of Police (DGP).

Currently serving as Director General of Police, Intelligence, Shivadhar Reddy received the appointment orders from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao issued the transfer order, posting him as DGP (Coordination) and placing him in full additional charge of DGP (Head of Police Force).

Shivadhar Reddy succeeds Dr. Jithender, who is retiring after attaining superannuation.

An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1994 batch, Shivadhar Reddy was a practising lawyer before clearing the Civil Services Examination. Over three decades of service, he has held several key positions at both district and state levels.

Born in Hyderabad, he completed his schooling and higher education in the city, graduating in LLB from Osmania University. After briefly practising law, he cleared the Civil Services Examination in 1994, joining the IPS and was allotted to the Andhra Pradesh cadre. After the bifurcation in 2014, his cadre was reassigned to Telangana.

He initially served as ASP in Anakapalli, Narsipatnam, and Chintapalli subdivisions of Visakhapatnam district and later with the elite Greyhounds in Bellampalli, Adilabad District. He served as SP of Nalgonda, Srikakulam, Nellore, and Guntur districts and as DCP, South Zone, Hyderabad (2007–08). He also headed the Special Intelligence Branch (SIB), served in the Anti-Corruption Bureau, and was deputed to the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK).

From 2012 to 2014, he was Commissioner of Police, Visakhapatnam. In 2014, he became the first Chief of Intelligence Department, Telangana. He later served in Personnel Wing, Railways, and Road Safety as Additional DGP. In December 2023, he was reinstated as Chief of Intelligence and promoted to DGP in August 2024.

Widely regarded as a no-nonsense, fair, and professional officer, Shivadhar Reddy is known for his impartiality and commitment. He has played a key role in curbing Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) and dismantling terror modules across states.

He has received numerous awards including Police Medal for Gallantry (2002), Antrik Suraksha Seva Medal (2003), UN Peace Medal (2003), Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2011), President’s Police Medal (2020), Ati Utkrisht Seva Padak (2023), and other commendations for exceptional service.
