India Offers Help to Save Satyajit Ray’s Ancestral Home in Bangladesh
The Government of India has shown concern over the demolition of Satyajit Ray’s ancestral house in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. This historic house belonged to Ray’s grandfather, Upendra Kishor Ray Chowdhury, a respected writer and publisher. In a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep regret and offered help to restore and repair the building.
India suggested that the house, which is now in poor condition, should not be destroyed. Instead, it could be repaired and turned into a museum of literature. The building is a symbol of the cultural connection between India and Bangladesh. India said it is ready to cooperate and support efforts to preserve this shared history.
The house is reportedly being demolished to make space for a new children’s academy. This decision has sparked anger among locals and historians in Bangladesh. They say the demolition will erase an important part of the city’s heritage. Though the property is recognized as historically valuable, calls to protect it have been ignored, according to local archaeology officials.
