The Indian Air Force (IAF) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Group Captain Dilip Kamalkar Parulkar (Retd), a decorated hero of the 1971 India-Pakistan War. He was a recipient of the Vayu Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal, remembered for his courage, quick thinking, and pride in serving the IAF.
Commissioned in 1963, he served in many important roles, including as a Flying Instructor at the Air Force Academy and a Battalion Commander at the National Defence Academy. He also represented India on deputation in Singapore for two years. In the 1965 war, even after being injured when his aircraft was hit, he flew it back to base, earning the Vayu Sena Medal.
During the 1971 war, as a Wing Commander, Parulkar was taken prisoner in Pakistan. He famously led one of the most daring escape attempts from a POW camp, showing exceptional bravery and determination. His actions inspired respect for the IAF, both in combat and in spirit. The IAF remembered him as a symbol of dedication and national pride, whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of air warriors.
