A significant step has been taken toward constructing the Hyderabad-Amaravati Greenfield Expressway, aimed at drastically reducing travel time between the capitals of the Telugu states. The alignment of the expressway has been nearly finalized, and once completed, the current 4.5-hour journey will be cut down to just 2.5 hours.
The expressway will begin near Tipparedipalli, close to the proposed Future City between the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and Regional Ring Road (RRR) in Hyderabad. From there, it will pass through Rangareddy, Nalgonda, and Suryapet districts in Telangana, running parallel to the current Vijayawada National Highway, before reaching Amaravati near Sattenapalli in Andhra Pradesh. The route will then connect to Bandaru Port via Lankelapalli.
The total length of the expressway is 297.82 km, with 118 km in Telangana and 180 km in Andhra Pradesh. As a result, the distance from Hyderabad Future City to Amaravati will be 211 km, which is 57 km shorter than the existing route.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy recently requested Union Road Minister Nitin Gadkari to construct the expressway with 12 lanes, to accommodate future traffic demand. Initial construction may start with 6 or 8 lanes, with plans to expand in phases. Including land acquisition and construction costs, the estimated investment is expected to exceed ₹10,000 crore.
Several key associated projects are also planned alongside the expressway. The Telangana government aims to connect the proposed dry port in Mahbubnagar with this expressway, enabling direct cargo transport to Bandaru Port. Additionally, both states have proposed constructing a high-speed rail corridor parallel to the expressway.
