H-1B Visa Trends: Decline in Indian IT Workers in the U.S.

Reduced Interest of Indian IT Companies in H-1B Visas

Recent data reveals a significant decline in the reliance of Indian IT services companies on H-1B visas in the United States. Over the past eight years, applications from major Indian IT firms have dropped by 56%, according to a report by the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP).

In 2015, seven leading Indian IT companies filed around 15,100 H-1B visa applications. By 2022-23, this number had fallen to just 6,700. One prominent Indian IT firm reduced its visa approvals by 75% during this period, highlighting a shift in strategy among Indian companies.

Meanwhile, U.S.-based tech giants are increasingly using H-1B visas. In the 2024 fiscal year, just five major American tech firms received nearly 28,000 H-1B visa approvals. These figures illustrate that while Indian IT companies are stepping back, U.S. tech giants continue to dominate H-1B visa utilization, reflecting broader trends in global tech employment.
