Jailer 2 Review Rajinikanth Shines Despite a Slow Second Half

Superstar Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian in Jailer 2, the sequel to his 2023 hit Jailer. Combining action, comedy and familiar mass moments, the film brings back the character’s signature style. While Rajinikanth’s screen presence and several entertaining sequences work in its favour, a predictable storyline and an extended second half prevent the film from maintaining its momentum throughout.

Story and Performances

The story begins after the death of Varma, played by Vinayakan. His death puts several powerful smuggling syndicates on the hunt for the person responsible. Muthuvel Pandian, who has been leading a peaceful life, becomes involved in the conflict as he attempts to identify the people controlling the criminal network. The narrative follows his efforts to track down the masterminds and confront them.

Rajinikanth remains one of the film’s biggest strengths. His trademark walk, signature gestures and slow removal of his glasses continue to generate excitement. He handles the role with confidence, relying on the screen presence and mannerisms that have long been associated with his star image.

The first half focuses heavily on comedy. Namo Narayana makes a strong impression with a character who repeatedly behaves as though he is in control of every situation. His interactions with Rajinikanth fit director Nelson’s deadpan humour, while Yogi Babu also contributes to the lighter moments. However, Namo Narayana’s reduced presence in the second half affects the film’s entertainment value.

Villains and Technical Highlights

SJ Suryah performs effectively as the principal antagonist, although the role does not take him far from the territory audiences have seen him explore before. Vidya Balan brings a different dimension to her screen image by playing his negative-role sister and handles the character convincingly. Suraj Venjaramoodu also makes an impression in his antagonistic role.

Anirudh Ravichander’s background score adds energy to several important sequences, particularly the action scenes. The return of the original Jailer theme helps recreate the atmosphere associated with the first film. The climax also leaves room for the story to continue in another instalment.

Where Jailer 2 Falls Short

The biggest weakness of Jailer 2 is its writing. The central plot feels relatively thin, with several portions seemingly designed to create opportunities for Rajinikanth’s hero moments. The overall structure also resembles the first film, leaving the new antagonists with limited freshness.

The nearly three-hour runtime makes these problems more noticeable. The second half loses pace between major sequences, and some portions feel unnecessarily prolonged. A tighter edit could have made the narrative more engaging.

The celebrity appearances also offer less excitement than expected. Mohanlal appears in only two scenes, while Shiva Rajkumar has approximately ten minutes of screen time. Jackie Shroff receives little to do, and Mithun Chakraborty’s role remains limited. Hrithik Roshan gets an introductory sequence, but it does not create a particularly memorable impact.

Final Verdict

Jailer 2 delivers several entertaining mass moments through Rajinikanth’s screen presence, Anirudh’s energetic score and the comedy in the first half. However, a familiar storyline, limited use of some supporting characters and a stretched second half hold it back. The film offers moments for Rajinikanth’s fans to enjoy, but stronger writing and tighter pacing could have made the sequel more satisfying.
