Director Balaji Tharaneetharan has shared insights into the creative process behind Baththa, explaining how its screenplay, emotional moments and character development came together. In a conversation with Gulte Pro’s Ram Venkat Srikar, the filmmaker discussed the ideas that shaped the story and the importance of giving its lead character a meaningful transformation.
Balaji revealed that the story developed gradually, with several ideas explored before he discovered a convincing reason for Baththa to enter a school. Finding the right motivation for this important moment proved challenging, as the director rejected multiple possibilities that did not suit the character. Once he settled on an idea that felt right, he moved forward with the detailed screenplay and continued refining the narrative through several changes.
Vijay Sethupathi’s Input on the Family Storyline
The director also highlighted the importance of Baththa’s family relationships in the film. According to Balaji, Vijay Sethupathi, who liked the story, encouraged him to maintain the focus on the protagonist’s connection with his family rather than allowing that aspect to lose importance.
Following this suggestion, Balaji developed additional scenes featuring Baththa, his wife and his child. These moments help establish another dimension to the character, adding emotional depth to a story that also explores his anger, arrogance and desire to make others fear him.
How a Child Changes Baththa
Balaji explained that he did not view Baththa as someone who was entirely bad from the beginning. Instead, the character is portrayed as a person who has lost touch with his own innocence and built a personality around fear and aggression.
The little boy plays a crucial role in bringing out the more vulnerable side of Baththa. Through their relationship, the child gradually reaches a part of the protagonist that has remained hidden for years. Balaji said the boy gives Baththa something he had long wanted since childhood, making their bond an essential part of the film’s emotional climax.
The Meaning Behind the Film’s Small Details
The filmmaker also discussed how seemingly simple scenes involving tomato chutney and rusk contribute to the larger storytelling. Although these sequences provide humour, they also communicate the character’s underlying pain and help establish suspense as the story progresses.
Balaji described Baththa as a crowd-pleasing film designed to connect with audiences through its emotional elements. He also praised Vijay Sethupathi’s willingness to embrace the vulnerable aspects of the character, explaining how the actor’s performance helped bring the screenplay and its emotional intentions to life.
Through its carefully developed character relationships, meaningful details and balance of humour and emotion, Baththa reflects Balaji Tharaneetharan’s approach to creating a story that offers more than entertainment alone.
