Chandrababu Naidu Seeks Modi’s Support for Godavari-Cauvery Link

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s support for the proposed Godavari-Cauvery river-linking project and several key infrastructure and agricultural initiatives in the state. During a meeting on Wednesday, Naidu discussed Andhra Pradesh’s development priorities, irrigation requirements, drought conditions and major projects requiring assistance from the Centre.

Naidu congratulated Modi on completing 25 years in public office. He credited the Prime Minister’s leadership, governance approach and emphasis on cooperative federalism with contributing to India’s growing international standing.

Godavari-Cauvery River Link Takes Centre Stage

One of the major topics discussed was the proposed Godavari-Cauvery river-linking project. Naidu highlighted its potential to strengthen water security across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

He suggested that river-linking initiatives could help establish a national water grid, following the expansion of the country’s road networks and electricity grids. The Chief Minister also briefed Modi on the current status of the Polavaram irrigation project.

Centre’s Assistance Sought for Godavari Pushkarams

Naidu requested financial support from the Central government for infrastructure and development works ahead of the Godavari Pushkarams scheduled for 2027. The Andhra Pradesh government expects the religious event to attract devotees from the Telugu states, other parts of India and overseas.

The proposed funding is intended to support the preparations and infrastructure requirements associated with the large gathering.

Rainfall Deficit and Agricultural Concerns

The Chief Minister also highlighted the challenges facing Andhra Pradesh’s agricultural sector. According to Naidu, the state recorded a 53 per cent rainfall deficit due to the impact of El Niño, significantly affecting farming activities.

He explained the drought-mitigation measures being implemented by the state government and discussed the broader economic situation and ongoing development initiatives with the Prime Minister.

Horticulture and Education Initiatives

Naidu briefed Modi on the Global Horticulture Hub launched in Madanapalle with Central government support. He also presented the proposal for an Indian School of Agriculture, envisioned along the lines of the Indian School of Business.

These initiatives form part of the state’s efforts to strengthen agriculture-related development and education.

Major Infrastructure Projects in Andhra Pradesh

The Chief Minister sought Central support for several important infrastructure proposals, including the Outer Ring Road around Amaravati, approval for the Visakhapatnam Metro and the proposed Beach Road project in Visakhapatnam.

Naidu also outlined the state’s Swarna Andhra-2047 vision, which aims to ensure that the benefits of development reach all sections of society.

The meeting covered a range of priorities, from water management and agricultural relief to transportation, education and infrastructure. Andhra Pradesh is seeking the Centre’s cooperation and financial assistance to advance these projects and address the state’s immediate development challenges.
