Telangana to Set Up Modern Goshalas, 3-Member Committee Formed
Hyderabad, July 10 – The Telangana Cabinet has decided to form a three-member committee, led by the Chief Secretary, to develop and manage modern goshalas (cow shelters) in the state. The panel has been instructed to submit its report before the next Cabinet meeting.
Following the direction of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, the Animal Husbandry Department has already prepared designs and a presentation for the proposed goshalas, which were shown during the Cabinet meeting.
The Cabinet approved the development of modern goshalas at Yenkepally (Hyderabad), Veterinary University, Vemulawada, and Yadagirigutta. Telangana currently has 306 registered goshalas, and the government plans to create a new policy to regulate and support their management.
Last month, the government announced its intention to frame a comprehensive cow protection policy. The CM instructed that a team should study goshalas in other states and suggest best practices for Telangana. The newly formed committee includes Sabyasachi Ghosh (Special Chief Secretary, Animal Husbandry), Shailaja Ramaiyar (Principal Secretary, Endowments), and Raghunandan Rao (Secretary, Agriculture).
The Chief Minister emphasized that cows hold cultural and spiritual significance and expressed concern over the poor conditions in existing goshalas, where donated cows have died due to overcrowding and lack of care.
To fix this issue, the government plans to build state-of-the-art cow shelters in the first phase at Vemulawada, Yadagirigutta, Yenkepally, and the Veterinary University, especially in areas where rituals like ‘Kode Mokku’ are commonly practiced.
