IPL 2025: MI Storm into Playoffs as Suryakumar, Bumrah, Santner Star in 59-Run Win Over DC
Mumbai, May 21 – Mumbai Indians booked their place in the IPL 2025 playoffs with a dominant 59-run win over Delhi Capitals in Match 63 at the Wankhede Stadium. A brilliant unbeaten 73 from Suryakumar Yadav, backed by incisive bowling spells from Mitchell Santner (3/11) and Jasprit Bumrah (3/12), powered MI to a commanding victory.
Batting first, MI were struggling at 132/5 with just two overs remaining. But Suryakumar, along with Naman Dhir (24* off 8), exploded at the death, smashing 48 runs in the final two overs to lift the total to 180/5. The late blitz turned the game as MI carried that momentum into their bowling innings.
Despite overcast conditions favoring the chase, DC faltered early. Bumrah and Santner were clinical, dismantling Delhi’s lineup as they were bowled out for 121 in 18.2 overs. Sameer Rizvi top-scored for DC with a fighting 39, but the rest of the batting collapsed under sustained pressure.
MI’s turnaround this season has been remarkable — from just one win in their first five games to six consecutive victories and a well-earned playoff spot.
For DC, it was another missed opportunity. Without captain Axar Patel, their bowling lacked edge, and after a promising start, their batting once again failed to deliver — a recurring theme in their 2025 campaign.
Earlier, MI’s innings saw brief flashes from Will Jacks (21) and Ryan Rickelton (25), but it was Suryakumar’s calm aggression that anchored the innings. His 43-ball knock, laced with clean hitting, proved decisive.
Brief scores:
Mumbai Indians 180/5 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 73 not out, Tilak Varma 27, Naman Dhir 24 not out; Mukesh Kumar 2-48, Kuldeep Yadav 1-22) beat Delhi Capitals 121 all out in 18.2 overs (Sameer Rizvi 39; Mitchell Santner 3-11, Jasprit Bumrah 3-12) by 59 runs
