Bank Customers Rejoice: Same-Day Check Clearance from Tomorrow

Good News for Bank Customers: Same-Day Check Clearance from Tomorrow

Bank customers no longer need to wait for days to get their checks cleared. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), starting October 4, the “Same-Day Check Clearance” system will be implemented. Major private banks, including HDFC and ICICI, have announced the rollout of this new facility.

Under this system, checks deposited in bank accounts will be cleared within a few hours, significantly speeding up the payment process while maintaining security. Banks advise account holders to maintain sufficient balance to avoid bounced checks and to fill in check details accurately.

To enhance security, the Positive Pay System is mandatory. For checks above ₹50,000, account holders must provide essential details—such as account number, check number, date, amount, and beneficiary name—to the bank at least 24 hours in advance. These details are sent to the designated regional office email IDs.

When a check is submitted, the bank matches it with the previously submitted details. If everything is correct, the check is cleared. If discrepancies are found, the check will be rejected. The RBI has already made the Positive Pay system mandatory for checks exceeding ₹5 lakh.

Currently, banks use the Check Truncation System (CTS), which requires at least two days to clear checks deposited via ATMs or drop boxes. The new system will eliminate these delays, allowing customers to access funds much faster.
